Press Release from February, 2011:

YOUNG WOMEN WRITING for a CHANGE receives ArtsWeek grant
Congratulations to the Young Women Writing for a Change program on the receipt of an ArtsWeek grant for "A Day of Writing and Art" workshop, to be held on February 19, 2011.

"Ekphrasis" is a fancy word for writing about visual works of art ('ek' means 'out' and 'phrasis' means 'to speak'), but media "mashup" may work just as well.

On Sat., Feb. 19, elementary and high school-age girls and young women have an unusual opportunity to immerse themselves in both writing and the visual arts during "A Day of Writing and Art," a workshop offered as part of IU's ArtsWeek 2011.

This event is all about creative exploration and artistic cross-pollination.

"We're going to play with writing and visual art to explore images and create stories," says Lodge-Rigal. "And 'play' is the operative word. 'Writing about art' can sound rather intimidating, but our focus is that the writing experience can be playful and deeply meaningful at the same time."

During the workshop, up to 30 participants will gather in an exhibition space hung with works by local artists. Facilitators will guide the group in writing responses to the visual art forms. Some of the artists whose work is displayed will talk with participants about their responses. A public reading and reception will take place at the end of the workshop. Young writers' pieces will be displayed next to the artwork during the reception.

"I've experienced many gifts during YWW. The main one is being
able to express my feelings, knowing that I will be listened to.
Also a gift is being able to make friends and just have a time
to let myself go and be able to talk/write with my heart
and not have to think about it carefully first. I really have had
an amazing time here in YWW.”
